Volunteer

Learning turns obstacles into opportunities.

Aspire volunteers go the extra mile by nurturing strong relationships that are necessary to help students gain the confidence to learn. If you have the desire to help adult learners who have made the brave choice to take charge of their own lives, then Aspire has opportunities for you. You provide the love for learning and we provide the training!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the time commitment as a volunteer instructor?

Typically our volunteers provide between 2 and 3 hours of service, 1 day per week. If you are unable to commit to a consistent weekly time, we have some volunteer roles that allow for a more flexible commitment such as a Moderator or Substitute Instructor.

Do I need previous teaching experience?

No teaching experience is required--just a passion for helping others in your community and a willingness to learn. We provide training, teaching materials, observation hours and anything else that you need to feel comfortable teaching your first class.

Do I need to be bilingual?

No. While we do have some volunteer roles that require Spanish fluency, such as teaching in our Spanish Education program, the bulk of our volunteer positions only require fluency in English.

Where would I be teaching?

You can choose from our campuses located in Dallas: Frazier House, Readers2Leaders, Owenwood Farm & Neighbor Space or an online class! We will do our best to find a spot for you at the location that is most convenient for you and your schedule.

How do I participate in online classes?

Lessons are taught through Microsoft Teams. You must have a quiet space in your home or workspace and adequate equipment for leading a class. This includes an internet connected PC with a camera and a microphone. We issue volunteers access to the Teams classroom and provide training.

What are the key responsibilities of a teacher?

Teachers are asked to show up prepared, with knowledge of the lesson and materials. During class, teachers are expected to encourage and engage in active participation from all students and treat everyone with respect and conscientiousness. Each day the teacher will submit attendance. When a teacher is going to be absent for the class, we ask that they communicate their absence with the Volunteer Director, so a substitute teacher can be arranged.

What are the qualifications for being a teacher?

There are no formal qualifications. We just ask that you are over the age of 21, a high school graduate, and are willing to submit to a background check. Additionally, teachers must be fluent in the language that they are teaching.

How many students would I be teaching?

Classes average between 5 and 20 students, depending on the program. If you want to start small, we also offer tutoring opportunities, which are one-on-one or in groups of two or three.

Do I need to provide my own curriculum? What kind of training and support can I expect?

No. While you may use your own resources to supplement course materials, each class has its own set of curricula. ESL teachers are also provided with a course outline to guide them through class activities. Teacher's manuals are also available for some classes. We ensure our volunteers are properly trained and prepared to teach our classes. We provide training classes covering the online teaching tools, materials, and recommended teaching techniques that facilitate success in the classroom.

Can I complete my TESOL/TEFL certificate course practicum with Aspire?

Absolutely! Teaching at Aspire is a terrific way for ESL teaching professionals in training to gain valuable experience. We have plenty of opportunities for teaching, so we can all but assure you will have your hours completed prior to your deadline.
